It is intended that the exhibit will reflect something of the history of orchids within the RHS. The display will resemble the interior of a Victorian greenhouse, with benches of orchids as well as freestanding pots. There will be some information about the RHS' links with orchids over the past 200 years.

"THE IMAGE OF THE NETHERLANDS is of cheese, windmills, tulips and wooden shoes. This is a nice folkloric portrait, but Holland is more than that, for in the past 50 years it has created  an important and powerful horticultural industry.
In 2001 it exported  2.903 billion euros worth of cutflowers (all varieties) and  pot plants to the value of 1.250 billion euros.
Large scale orchid production began in the Netherlands 30 years ago and it is now the largest producer and exporter of orchids in the world, and it is also unrivalled in its orchid production per square meter.

According to figures provided by  United Nations Comstats the annual world trade in orchids, including flowers and pot plants, is more than 150 million US dollars. This is incorrect because the Dutch flower auctions, for orchid flowers alone, had a turnover of 154 million euros in 2001 (and a euro is approximately one US dollar), not including the sale of  imported orchid cutflowers. In comparison the annual value of exports from THAILAND is only 54 million euros for orchid cutflowers and potplants.

Dutch production concentrates on propagating selected orchid hybrids from around the world and up to now have been importing and growing on seedlings imported from third world countries to flowering size. As the Dutch laboratories expand to meet the demand for seedlings, this will change."
